Plan A 3-Day Trip to Puerto Rico
While three days won’t allow you to see it all, it’s enough to experience what makes the island so special.
Day 1: Ok, but first, the beach!
Start your trip by easing into vacation mode with a visit to the beach. After settling into your accommodations, head to Isla Verde Beach, close to San Juan, where golden sands and turquoise waters await, along with plenty of places to enjoy a meal. If you’re on the east coast, La Posita Beach in Piñones or the picturesque La Monserrate in Luquillo make great introductions to Puerto Rico’s relaxed atmosphere. Travelers in the south will find La Parguera and Boquerón and their vibrant waterfront views with eateries and local charm, while those exploring the west will fall in love with the colorful Crash Boat Beach or Jobos in Isabela. Spend your first day soaking up the sun, enjoying the crystal-clear water, and indulging in fresh, local cuisine.
Day 2: Bucket list items
On your second day, fuel your intrepid side with outdoor activities that showcase Puerto Rico’s natural splendor. For thrill-seekers, Toro Verde Adventure Park in Orocovis has record-breaking zip lines like “The Monster” and unique Toro Bikes, all surrounded by stunning mountain views. After an adrenalinefilled morning, relax with a visit to Hacienda San Pedro, a family-owned coffee plantation where you can savor the complex flavors of Puerto Rican coffee while learning about its production. Alternatively, explore the northern region’s one-of-a-kind limestone formations by visiting Río Camuy Cave Park. Home to the world’s third-largest underground river, the park features fascinating caves filled with ancient pictographs. To add an extra touch of excitement, you can rappel down a rocky cliff at Roca Norte in Vega Baja, surrounded by jaw-dropping scenery. Close your day by watching the sunset over the island’s vast, sparkling coastline, a serene end to an action-packed day.
Day 3: Forts, cafés, and a rainforest
Dedicate your final day to immersing yourself in Puerto Rico’s heritage and lush landscapes. Begin in Old San Juan, where you can wander through cobblestone streets lined with historic treasures. Visit iconic sites such as Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Fuerte San Cristóbal, marvel at the San Juan Bautista Cathedral, and browse local boutiques. Take some time to sip a freshly brewed coffee at Café Don Ruiz before leaving the city. From there, head to Río Grande to explore El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. Marvel at the towering trees, listen to the distinctive chirps of the coquí frog, and take in breathtaking views from observation towers like Yokahú and Mt. Britton.
Finally, as your trip comes to an end, slow down and enjoy a few final peaceful moments. Relax by the pool or at a nearby beach with a cocktail in hand, soaking in the island vibes until it’s time to head to the airport. Puerto Rico’s gorgeous beaches, fun activities, and traditions make it an ideal destination for a three-day escape, leaving you with memories that will have you planning your return trip before you even get home.
